How It Works & Formula

The U.S. Navy method uses circumference measurements to estimate body density, which is then converted to body fat percentage. The formulas differ for men and women.

For Men: % Body Fat = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log(height)) − 450
For Women: % Body Fat = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log(height)) − 450

Where:
Waist = Circumference at navel level (men) or narrowest point (women)
Neck = Circumference below the larynx (Adam's apple)
Hip (women) = Largest horizontal circumference around hips and buttocks
Height = Total body height
• All measurements in consistent units (inches or cm)

BMI Method: % Body Fat = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age − 10.8 × Gender Factor

• Men: 10.8 (results in −16.2 adjusted)
• Women: 5.4 (results in −5.4 adjusted)

Lean Body Mass Calculation

Lean Mass = Total Weight − (Total Weight × Body Fat % / 100)

Lean body mass includes muscle, bone, organs, and water — everything except fat tissue.
